1. Is this really Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu? How does JustFlow differ?
100% - you will learn BJJ. But here's the difference. In a typical BJJ school, flow rolling exists but is not common. Part of the thrill of training BJJ is the fact that one is able to fully test and prove one's skills on the mat with every roll ("roll" is used to describe sparring in Jiu-Jitsu, likened to two people rolling around on the mat). With a constant inclination to track how one stacks up among fellow practitioners, it is natural that students would rather roll full on vs. just flow. Flow rolling then becomes under-utilized.
While live rolling is essential, the incorporation of flow rolling allows students to improve and expand their game more rapidly. Their focus is not to avoid giving up position or control at all cost, but stay relaxed and open to trying new techniques.
At JustFlow, we are reversing the script, making flow rolling the norm. If students want to live roll, they absolutely can. They just need to ask, " Live roll?"
2. Is this really something that an older person or persons with physical limitations can do?
Absolutely! The JustFlow style of training helps to mitigate concerns surrounding age, physical limitations and injury, allowing those who would otherwise opt out to have the opportunity to experience and enjoy the vast benefits of the profound art of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Our instructors will always be mindful of a student's limitations and structure their training accordingly.
3. How is a typical JustFlow class run?
A typical JustFlow class is run in similar fashion to the traditional Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu class. We begin the class with warm up drills simulating a variety of movements that correlate with those used in Jiu-Jitsu. Next, we teach a technique and the students are given time to drill and repeat the technique while the instructor helps to correct and fine tune the student's execution of the technique. The final segment of the class is where the JustFlow training takes place and students will just flow roll with the instructor and other students.
4. Are submissions allowed at JustFlow?
Yes, they are. But we emphasize proper technique and control so that the person executing the submission does not need to overly exert his or her energy or "crank" their partner's limbs or joints. If the partner is a beginner and doesn't know when to TAP, the more experienced student will know to either hold the position or just release the submission and continue to flow.
5. What do students wear to train and what are the hygiene requirements?
When training in NoGi, students are required to wear long sleeve rash guards, full length spats and board shorts. For Gi training, students are required to wear a traditional Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Gi along with both top and bottom full length rash guards. Student's hands and feet are to be clean with finger and toe nails trimmed to their base, hair is to be clean and tied up if longer then shoulders length, Gi's and rash guards are to be laundered and clean. No jewelry, rings or earrings are to be worn during training. No open wounds, cuts or scrapes and if covered, will need to be wrapped with an ACE bandage so that any bandage or gauze remains intact and does not become displaced during training.
6. Are group sessions taught at the Private JustFlow Studio?
The Private JustFlow Studio is typically reserved for private one-on-one lessons or private sessions with no more than three students. Larger class formats are held at Barrios Martial Arts located just down the block at 1756 18th Street
